CHAPTER HISTORY

Williamsburg Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a member of the South Atlantic Region.  This region is the youngest in Delta and was established in 1960; prior to that time it was a part of the Southern Region.  The South Atlantic Region is composed of the states of South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Bermuda.

Williamsburg Alumnae Chapter was chartered on December 5, 1981 at the Hospitality House in Williamsburg, Virginia by seventeen women who had a desire to provide service to their community.  Norma Sermon, South Atlantic Regional Director, conducted the chartering ceremony.  Representatives from alumnae chapters in Lawrenceville, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Suffolk and Virginia Beach attended the event.

The Chapter Service Area is the City of Williamsburg, James City County, York County, Mathews County, and Gloucester County.

Williamsburg Alumnae held meetings in the early years at each other’s homes.   One of the first service programs was the May Week Program.  It was held in May 1982 and Book Scholarships were awarded to college bound high school students.  The May Week Program continues as the chapter annually awards five scholarships to deserving high school seniors and recognizes its community partners.

Today our chapter membership is eighty members which includes two of our visionary charter members, the Honorable Cressondra Conyers and Dr. Louise Cosby. We are a close-knit chapter that values sisterhood, scholarship, and service.
